Or, maizy doats and dozy doats…..? What does this have to do with anything? Weird combinations , I suppose. Thought I would post this marbled snowflake plate, inspired by a star plate that Solomon Grimm produced back in the early 1800s.
The snowflake instead of a star came to mind a few weeks ago when I was trudging through a foot of snow to get to the studio; after seeing billions and billions of them, (snowflakes) I guess it was just natural to pay homage to the masses.
This redware plate is first marbled with slip, then carved through, sgraffito style, with a small piece of tin. Then more slip is added to give it depth. The edge of the plate is textured by pressing the shell in small sections around the rim.
So, does all this make sense now? The maizy doats and dozy doats thing is still a little up in the air, but one can google that and find out plenty… and don’t forget, a liddle lamzey divey.

Hi Tom, I bought a piece from you at the Christmas fair a few years ago with the black background and the center has a bird on a branch. The border has arches with what looks like corn between them and around the center there is an intricate cross hatch in red and gold. If you recall that bowl, could you tell me the inspiration behind it again? I am finally going to get to work on a quilt using your design elements in it and when I submit it to the show in Paducah when it is finished, I would like to tell the story behind it. At that time, or at this time, I will need an email from you giving me your “design permission” for my quilt, which I promised you I would bring to you and show you when it is done. I may also include that spectacular starburst design if I decide to make separate blocks. Not sure yet exactly how I am going to design the quilt. By the way, how much is that plate/bowl? I love the black backgrounds!
